Smt. Nirmala Birla envisioned Modern High School International as a progressive, leading-edge institution aiming to provide to students of Kolkata an opportunity to study an international curriculum. With this vision, MHSI was created and with its state-of-the-art infrastructure it opened its doors for students interested in pursuing the Cambridge or the IB Diploma Programme.

Smt. Birla is also known for her philanthropic disposition. In addition to being the inspiration for all industrial and public welfare endeavours of her late husband Shri GP Birla, she has been directly associated with the functioning and development of various charitable institutions.
She supervises the functioning of various temples including those in Jaipur, Hyderabad and Bhopal. The G.P. Birla Archaeological and Cultural Research Institute was established in Hyderabad at her initiative. It comprises of various divisions such as BM Birla Planetarium, the Science Museum, the Modern Art Gallery and the Archaeological Museum Library and Observatory. She has also established a trust and initiated the G.P. Birla Merit and Means Scholarship for funding the higher education of under-privileged meritorious students across West Bengal. Her dream is to help develop and empower the talented youth of the country.
